Flash back to 2014. This was an exciting, amazing, and awful year all in one! I found out in January that I was pregnant. Early spring we were able to go find out that we were having a baby girl!!! I was so elated I could not even describe it! I had my two perfect boys and now I was going to have a baby girl to have everything I ever wanted for my family! My beautiful little girl was born the end of September and I things couldn't have been better! We got to love every minute with her and her big brothers! The boys were beyond excited and became the best big brothers you could ever ask for. Move ahead to October 2014 when the boys turned 6. It was a beautiful fall day, we played outside, played kickball, and of course came back inside for cake and ice cream! They were perfect! October 25th, 2014...The boys went to the salon for a hair cut. Nothing new, nothing different until...my husband picked up Kiel and put him in the chair only to feel a big bump on his back. He looked it over and thought well it doesn't hurt so we were sure it was nothing and went about the day. The next day, October 26th, 2014...My best friend got married!!! It was a beautiful ceremony and I got to be her bridesmaid while my amazing family was there to join me in celebration of her wonderful day! We danced and laughed and danced some more. The boys had some serious dance moves it was crazy! After all this we still couldn't help but wonder what was on Kiel's left flank. We decided it would be best to call the doctor the very next morning and have it checked out. We took him to his pediatrician and they suggested he get an ultrasound just to see what was going on with it.
This was the moment our hearts sunk and we felt something was wrong! We took him for his ultrasound later in the day and they said we will get back to you with the results, okay so no worries then. His pediatrician called us the next morning and said you need to take him to the hospital right away! So we took him to our closest children's hospital to see what was going on! It was Halloween and all the kiddos could think about were dressing up for Halloween and going trick or treating.
Kiel had to go get a series of tests done including, blood work, an MRI, and a biopsy of the bump on his lower back/side. We waited anxiously as we have never been through this kind of thing before. His brother Jacob, went and did some trick of treating around the hospital floor while we waited and waited for Kiel to come back from the OR.
The doctor came into the room with two nurses to let us know what was going on. Kiel was sitting in a recovery room. The doctor then told us that our perfect and healthy 6 year little boy was sick...very sick. The news no parents want to hear about their children. The doctor then told us that the bump wasn't a bump but instead a malignant tumor!! Our world crashed!!!
Our perfect little boy had cancer! 6 years old and life was no longer filled with games, trips to the park, or the beach (which we did every year since they were 1) and spontaneous fun. This 6 year old was going to be taking trips to the hospital over and over and over again. This meant no more "normal" life for our family.
